About me

I’m Tom, the maker behind Colehurst Crafts. I create wooden homeware and gifts in my Shropshire workshop, shaping and finishing each piece to bring out the character of the wood.

Made with the wood in mind

My work includes coasters, tealight holders, decorative mushrooms, bud vases and other wooden pieces for the home. From the warm orange tones of yew to the grain of oak and the dark character of wenge, the wood helps guide what I make.

Making the most of every piece

Where possible, I use reclaimed wood, along with offcuts and smaller pieces bought from local timber merchants. There is a lot of potential in a small piece of timber, and I enjoy turning it into something useful and beautiful.

Creating as little waste as possible is something I strongly believe in. I work with the size, shape and character of the wood available, adapting a piece where needed to make good use of it. This can mean small differences in thickness, dimensions or shape between pieces, alongside the natural variations in grain and colour.

Familiar designs, individual character

My online collection focuses on designs I can make again, including coasters, tealight holders and sets for the home. Each follows the same overall design, while the wood and handmade process give every piece its own character.

Unless a listing specifically states that you will receive the piece pictured, the photographs show examples of the design. Your item will be very similar in overall style, but will not be the exact one shown. Please refer to each listing for approximate dimensions and details of what is included.

Care in every detail

I cut, shape, sand and finish my work by hand, with attention given to the details you do not always see. For my coasters, that includes cutting and gluing each cork backing individually. My tealight holders incorporate my own stainless steel and slate insert design, with inserts I cut and finish myself.

Larger work, too

Before taking my homeware to craft markets, I made the European oak gates at Waters Upton cemetery. Built using traditional mortice and tenon joinery, they show another side of my work with wood.

See the gates in my gallery, or get in touch about a project you have in mind.

Meet the maker

I also sell at craft and makers markets, where you can explore the wider range, see the wood and finishes in person, and have a chat about how the pieces are made.
