Ebonised Oak Coasters with Coloured Grain, Choose Your Colours
Handcrafted oak coasters with a deep ebonised finish and coloured grain highlights. Each coaster is cut, shaped and finished by hand in my Shropshire workshop, with a high density cork backing that I cut and glue individually.
How I ebonise the oak
I prepare my own iron acetate solution in my workshop. Applied to the oak, it reacts with the wood’s naturally occurring tannins to develop a deep black colour within the surface fibres.
The black colour comes from this reaction in the wood’s surface, rather than an applied black pigment. I then highlight the grain with colour and finish each coaster by hand, bringing out the individual pattern in the oak.
Choose your colours
Available as a pair for £22 or a set of four for £42. Choose red, green, blue, white, purple or bronze for each coaster. Select the same colour throughout for a matching set, or mix your favourites.
The photographs show the colour range and examples of matching sets. Your order contains the number of coasters selected.
Carefully made, front and back
The ebonised oak provides a dark background for the coloured grain, bringing out the natural pattern in each piece. Every coaster is individually finished by hand.
I cut the high density cork backing myself and glue it in place using Titebond III. This gives each coaster a carefully fitted backing, with attention given to the underside as well as the finished face.
Size
The oak is approximately 10 mm thick, with cork backing beneath. Small differences in thickness and shape are part of the handmade process.
Making the most of the wood
Where possible, I use reclaimed wood, offcuts and smaller pieces bought from local timber merchants to make my homeware. Working with the timber available helps me keep waste to a minimum and can bring small differences in thickness, dimensions or shape between pieces. Each follows the same overall design, with measurements given approximately.
Handmade variation
Each piece is individually handmade, so slight variations in size, shape, grain and colour are part of the making process. The photographs show examples of the design. Your pieces will be very similar in overall style, but will not be the exact ones pictured.
The amount and pattern of coloured grain vary naturally from coaster to coaster, including within a matching set.
Care
Wipe spills promptly with a soft, damp cloth and allow the coasters to dry. Do not soak, put in the dishwasher or use abrasive cleaners.
